The Walking Dead in Georgia: A Self-Guided Tour to the Filming Locations South of Atlanta

Beware of massive season 2 and 3 spoilers! Every big fan of The Walking Dead should include a visit of the filming locations when staying in Atlanta, Georgia. This year I finally took time for this self-guided tour. Starting up rather late I didn’t see many of the locations, as darkness cropped up… These locations are not the ones in the center of Atlanta but only some of those in the South of Georgia’s capital. The starting point of my 2-hours-trip was Hartsfield Jackson International Airport, Atlanta.

Stop 1: The Carriage Bar

Address: Terrentine Rd and Main Street, Sharpsburg, GA 30277, USA.
Appearance: Season 2, episode 8 (“Nebraska”). In this episode Hershel is entering this bar to consume alcohol after Shane has opened his barn and shot all the Walkers, including Hershel’s family. Glenn and Rick find him in that bar.
The location: You can easily take pictures of the bar, as there are enough parking spaces alongside the road. The surrounding area was quite peaceful – just one dog was barking at me from somewhere far away…

Stop 2: Pharmacy

Address: 58-98 Main St., Sharpsburg, Georgia, USA.
Appearance: Season 2, episode 4 (“Cherokee Rose”). Maggie and Glenn go to that pharmacy several times to get various things like a pregnancy test for Lori. Here Maggie lends herself to Glenn: “I’ll have sex with you.”
The location: This building is located at the same crossover where the bar (stop 1) is. You can see it in the background of the picture showing the bar.

Stop 3: The Gathering of Rick and the Governor

Address: Railroad Street, GA, 30229, USA.
Appearance: Season 3, episode 13 (“Arrow in the Doorpost”). Andrea has induced a meeting between Rick and the Governor to talk things out and hopefully find a peaceful solution. Also here, the Governor kills Merle some time later, and Daryl finds his undead brother here.
The Location: Alike stop 1 and 2 there’s not much going on here. You can park anywhere and you can easily circle the whole area.

In comparison to the other stops this area is very big and therefore I took more than one picture. By the way, there are “no trespassing” signs around, and professional photography is prohibited, too. How glad I am to only have a small unprofessional compact camera with me…

Stop 4: The film studios which contain, among others, the prison.

Address: 600 Chestlehurst Rd., Senoia, GA, 30276, USA.
Appearance: Season 2, episode 3 (“Seed”). The prison provides Rick and his group shelter and a home for a longer period of time. This is where Lori’s child is born and Hershel gets killed by the Governor.
The location: It’s strictly forbidden to enter the area of the film studios, and there’s also a security guard at the end of the road. It just so happens that I know someone who was working for The Walking Dead at the studios that time, but he did not have the chance to bring someone else. Therefore I only took this picture from the outside.

Stop 5: Woodbury

Address: 1 Main Street, Senoia, GA 30276, USA.
Appearance: Season 3, episode 3 (“Walk with me”). Woodbury is the Governor’s city. Andrea, Michonne and Merle stay here for a while and later Daryl is forced to fight with his brother in Woodbury. Maggie and Glenn are kept under arrest, Andrea dies, and Michonne kills the Governor’s daughter in this small town.
The location: My navigation system sadly wasn’t in the condition to find “1 Main Street, Senoia” and so I had to find my way searching for the crossway “Main Street” and “Seavy Street”. The center of Senoia does not only look like you truly are in Woodbury, but also like the setting of many other US-American provincial towns. You can find a The Walking Dead souvenir shop called Woodbury Shoppe at Main Street. Unfortunately it closes in the afternoon, so I wasn’t able to get in.

I didn’t make it to any other locations that day – but I think that was a nice start-up. Apart from that I have visited the location of the DVD cover of season 1 and the very first camp where Lori still had to assume Rick was dead. If you went to these Southern locations in darkness please beware of all the deer that live in this area and drive carefully! This is your complete route to all the stops from above:
