I am excited and happy! Happy I decided to fly in for Elvis Week 2015! After all it’s the Elvis Week during which Elvis fans from around the world celebrate Elvis Presley’s 80th birthday! In 2013 I first visited Memphis, Tupelo, and Elvis Week. Back then I unfortunately did not have much time and saw not much more than the “Aloha from Hawaii” concert for the 40th anniversary at the Orpheum Theatre. This time it will be different, because this time I will have time! Above all, I will cover Elvis week on this travel blog (more or less) live. So how does my schedule look like?
Elvis Week starts on August 8, 2015. The day after, I will arrive and in the evening attend the concert starring Shawn Klush, Cody Ray Slaughter and Dean Z at the New Daisy Theater. On Monday I will attend the first day of the “Images of the King Contest”, followed by the evening concert starring Dean Z, Jay Dupuis and Ben Portsmouth. As Ben unfortunately was not able to perform at “Europe’s Tribute to Elvis” in Blackpool, England, I’ve never seen him on stage before. On Tuesday I can see him on stage for the second time at his acoustic concert. After that the semi-finals of the “Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest” will be held in the evening. This title is the one you want to get as an Elvis impersonator! People from around the world compete in national contests before coming to Memphis each year.
August 12 is going to be a very exciting day, which already starts at 8 a.m.: at this time an Elvis Presley Forever stamp is going to be released for the first time since 1993. Priscilla Presley, who was married to Elvis Presley, will also attend this USPS event. After that the second day of the “Images of the King Contest” continues and in the evening there will be an “Elvis Meets The Beatles’ concert with Cody Ray Slaughter and Chris Connor. On Thursday I will attend a Jukebox Live Event before the finals of the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest will take place in the evening. On Friday I will start the day with a press conference, followed by the finals of the “Images of the King Contest”. In the evening there I will attend the last concert during Elvis Week: the premiere of Cody Ray Slaughter’s “Elvis ’56”. On August 15 the Candle Light Vigil will be the last event I am attending during Elvis Week 2015, as I have to head back to Florida to catch my flight back home to Germany. However, on August 16, Elvis Presley’s death, the Elvis Week 2015 will end.
Apart from all those events, during Elvis Week 2015 there will be much more going on around Graceland and Memphis. Join several free concerts at the “Free Entertainment Tent” at Graceland Crossing, and listen to Tribute Artist Champions. Nearly every day during Elvis Week (and nearly on any other day of the year) you can also walk to the Meditation garden for free at several times (in the morning and in the evening), to see where Elvis Presley is buried. You see, there’s so much going on during Elvis Week so you won’t get bored! I can only encourage you to stop by in Graceland or Memphis or at least take a look at my blog to see what’s going on at Elvis Week 2015. Even if you’re not a fan of Elvis Presley, you might find some interesting information!
Best wishes,
Claire
